2018 Mazda Axela Update, Japan, China

The 2018 Mazda Axela comes without bigger changes compared to the last year model. Usually known as Mazda 3, this compact car uses Axela name in domestic Japan market, as well as in China. Still, it is hard to find some bigger differences compared to those models offered worldwide.

The original version came in 2003 when the iconic Mazda 323 was finally discontinued. The new model continued with the pretty much same philosophy. So far, we have seen three generations of Mazda Axela. The original version came in 2003.

On the other side, the current generation is present since 2013. It already received some subtle changes. A mid-cycle update was done for the last-year model and it included various kinds of changes. Considering all this, it was pretty much expected from 2018 Axela to come without bigger changes. It comes with same design and engines, but with few new standard features.

2018 Mazda Axela update

As we already mentioned, this compact car was updated last year. For that occasion, we have seen numerous changes. First of all, there were changes in terms of styling. The refreshed version features several new, pretty subtle details. Of course, most of them are at the front, but other areas suffered as well. Plenty of novelties came inside too. Some of the most important changes are a new steering wheel, new instrument cluster etc. Considering all these changes, it was hard to expect bigger changes after just one year.

Although there are some new standard features for the 2018 Mazda Axela, the base trim-level organization remains the same. There are three variants of this excellent compact car.

The base trim is called Sport. Finally, a top-range Grand Touring comes not only with more standard features, but with several exterior tweaks as well. Complete exterior lighting is LED, while interior includes things like digital speedometer, an upgraded display in the instrument panel, leather upholstery, nine-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

2018 Mazda Axela engines

Just like Mazda 3, 2018 Mazda Axela comes with a range of SkyActive engines. There are three gasoline engines in the offer, from 1.5 to 2.5 liters of displacement. Depending on the market, power could go from 120 to 185 horsepower. All models are available with a 6-speed manual transmission, but some versions could use automatic gearbox as well.

In China, there is a familiar 2.2-liter diesel engine in the offer as well. This engine delivers around 150 horses and 280 pound-feet of torque. It could come with either manual or automatic transmission too. Just like with the worldwide models, this one should also get a new SkyActive X engine, probably next year.
