The attractive sports coupe from Japan comes with some nice updates as 2018 Toyota 86. This small sports car was actually developed by Subaru and it is also known as Subaru BRZ. On the other side, Toyota’s version was originally released under company’s sub-brand Scion. However, we saw new names last year. Depending on markets, it comes as GT 86, FR 86, but in most of the markets, it is known as just 86.
The original version came in 2012. Since then, we didn’t see many changes. So, this update is more than welcome. While base design characteristics remain the same, there is a completely new Performance Kit package. It adds various new details in terms of mechanics, visual appearance and new equipment inside. Unfortunately, there are no changes on the powertrain, so this version will come with the same amount of power.
2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit gets many new features
The package will include various kinds of modifications. First of all, there are some new mechanical details. For example, the new 2018 Toyota 86 with Performance Kit will feature Brembo brakes, for improved stopping power, specially-tuned Sachs performance dampers to increase handling stability and responsiveness. Also, there are new 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. Also, there are some nice visual updates on the new 2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit, such as a new Moon Slate exterior color, which comes in a special combination that includes black finish for the wheels, side mirror casings, and rear spoiler. Finally, there is a new Red Interior trim, as well as an updated infotainment system. Rest of the car remains pretty much the same. Unfortunately, this also includes powertrain.
2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit engine
Although many of us hoped that the new package will include more power, we are about to see the same engine under the hood. It is a familiar 2.0-liter Boxer engine from Subaru, which is good for about 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Although this engine features an amazing quality and delivers a pretty decent amount of power, we hoped for some more. With this engine, the new 2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit will keep pretty much the same numbers when it comes to performances. This small sports coupe will need around 6.7 seconds for a 0-60 sprint, while the max power could easily go over 140 miles per hour. Fuel economy numbers are also pretty good. This coupe returns around 25 mpg in the city and 33 on a highway.
Other versions of 2018 Toyota 86 will also get some updates
While the new Performance Kit includes various kinds of new things, rest of the lineup will also get some mild updates. We are about to see a new version of the infotainment system, as well as navigation. This will be standard across the whole range, according to some reports. Rest of the equipment in base models will remain the same. It will include features like keyless entry, a height-adjustable driver seat, a leather-wrapped, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control and a rearview camera. There are also standard features like 7-inch touchscreen, voice commands, an eight-speaker sound system with HD radio, Bluetooth, USB etc.
2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit price
While the price of standard models will remain the same, the new 2018 Toyota 86 Performance Kit will cost you few thousands more. Expect a price around 30.000 dollars, while base versions will go around 27.000 dollars.
Competition in the segment is pretty tough. There are various small sports cars around. Key competitors are models like Mazda MX-5 Miata, Fiat 124, Subaru BRZ etc.
