The Japanese manufacturer prepares a lot of novelties for the next year, including a completely new diesel-powered model, which will come as 2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel. This truck has been offered exclusively for the North American market and it is one of the best models in the segment.
So far, we have seen three generations of the truck. The current model is present since 2015, so we could say it is a good time for some updates. Besides a new engine, this truck is also about to get a new visual appearance. This model has been based on the legendary Hilux for years and latest reports suggest it will finally feature the same design language, or similar at least.
On the inside, 2019 Tacoma Diesel should come with the same cabin design as gasoline models, with only some minor changes on the instrument cluster.
2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel redesign
This truck has been one of the segment leaders for years, and that is for a good reason. Just like previous models, this generation is also based on the legendary Hilux, which is offered all around the world and already comes with few diesel units in the offer. So, this move to introduce an oil-burner version to the U.S. market seems natural.
Compared to gasoline models, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel will feature completely the same design. Still, it is important to mention that an update is on its way. According to the latest reports, this update will be mostly about visual appearance. The American truck will finally get the same face as Hilux, which means adoption of the brand’s newest design language. In terms of mechanics, we don’t expect bigger changes.
2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel interior
On the inside, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel will come without bigger differences compared to gasoline models. We are about to see a familiar cabin design, which actually comes in two layouts. Base models feature extended-cab design, so we can consider them as some kind of workhorse models. On the other side, crew-cab models offer much more space and comfort. The dashboard will be the same, although we could see some tweaks to the instrument cluster, which seem logical considering a different type of powertrain. When it comes to equipment, we expect that the new diesel engine will be offered through the whole range of Tacoma models. Still, don’t expect to see it under the hood of new, off-road-oriented TRD Pro model.
As we’ve just mentioned, the new engine should be available in all trim levels except TRD Pro. This means that the cheapest version with oil-burner will be a very base SR model, which comes with only unnecessary equipment. Some of notable standard features are 16-inch steel wheels, 4.2-inch display, rearview camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity etc. It is important to mention that all trims, including SR, feature Toyota’s Safety Sense package, with safety systems like automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.
The next in the line is SR5. This model comes with bumpers and other plastic surfaces paint in the same color as sheet metal. Also, there are standard features like upgraded sound system with satellite radio, smartphone integration, navigation, as well as optional alloy wheels.
The TRD Off-Road trim finally adds a 7-inch touchscreen and 16-inch alloy wheels. There are numerous mechanical modifications, such as new suspension, lockable rear differential, off-road tires, skid plate and much more.
Finally, there is a Limited trim. This is a comfort-oriented version of the truck, which comes with a lot of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires. It comes in crew-cab version only, with a short bed.
2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel engine
Finally, few words about the engine. It’s no secret that diesel engines are becoming more and more popular among truck drivers. An additional torque means a lot when it comes to towing and other hard work. We still don’t know the exact unit, but it will definitely be borrowed from Hilux.
The international model comes with two different diesel units, depending on the market. The first one is a 3.0-liter V6, which is good for about 163 horsepower. However, it comes in a pair with 5-speed automatic, which seems a little bit outdated.
On the other side, a 2.8-liter unit comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and it is more efficient. A total output of this engine goes around 177 horses. Considering these numbers, it becomes clear that the latter one sounds much more likely to be installed under the hood of 2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel.
2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel release date and price
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel is expected to come somewhere in the second half of the year. A more precise launch date is yet to come. When it comes to the price, it will probably cost few thousands more compared to models with a four-cylinder gasoline engine. In numbers, this means around 26-27.000 dollars for the base model.
