Shown at New York International Auto Show, the 2019 Toyota Yaris continues its budget-centric focus but now looks more up a class in all segments. The Toyota is now focusing on sprucing up its entire lineup and the Japanese car giant is leaving no stone unturned for outshining rivals like Ford and Honda.
The competition is growing in the subcompact car segment and hatchbacks are much in demand. The Toyota does not want to miss the opportunity and so it has revamped the Yaris hatchback for 2019. It gets some styling updates and technologies also receive a boost.
2019 Toyota Yaris – Minor Changes and Colors
Styling wise, the 2019 Toyota Yaris hatchback receives minor changes. The front side looks aggressive and Sporty with sleek headlamps. It has a sedan version but the similarities are few. The V-shape air intake and nose down design are enticing. There are 3 trims- L. Le and SE. The car is sold in exterior hues like Red Mica Metallic, Citrus Mica Metallic, Super White II, Grey metallic, Silver Metallic and Attitude Black Mica. It is sold in 3 and 5 door models. However, top SE trim comes only in 5 door setup. The SE model also gets mesh-pattern piano black grille and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Overall the design is reminiscent of its pricing stable mate Corolla and to an extent, Prius C.
The cabin of 2019 Toyota Yaris hatchback may not look lavish but you may call it upscale given its modest price tag. Even inside the cabin, you can spot styling cues borrowed from the Corolla. Everything from the dashboard to instrument cluster and door panels looks new and more enticing. As it is natural for a compact hatchback, the default cargo capacity of new Yaris is nothing to brag about! Default storage space at back is 15.6 cubic feet and a little less for the 3-door models.
Safety Features and Amenities
The manufacturer equips the 2019 Toyota Yaris hatchback with good safety features and amenities are also decent. The L and LE trim feature Entune infotainment system with the touch-screen display. They also get Bluetooth and satellite radio. Top SE trim gets upgraded Entune system and 7-inch touch display. It also adds HD radio and navigation. Leather seating, however, is not available at all.
The 2019 Toyota Yaris models get safety features like enough airbags and Toyota Safety Sense-C. The latter includes lane departure warning, front collision warning along with automatic high beams. The trims also get hill-start assist and traction control.
Engine, EPA Rating and Transmission
The 2018 Toyota Yaris is powered by a 1.5-liter inline-4 engine and that makes 106 HP. It is quite good for urban driving but takes a fully loaded car on the highway and it shows the limitations. Fuel economy, however, is quite good. The engine can be clubbed with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
Availability and Cost
The 2019 Toyota Yaris will be made available in late 2018. Base trim price may be around $16,000. The 2019 hatchback gets decent updates in style and safety features. However, an average performing engine and lack of certain amenities give rivals the edge.
