With less than 2,000 sold units, the market performance of the Toyota Yaris hatchback could be called very poor. Just, for example, the company sold 25,000 sedans. Either way, this is not making the Japanese company happy. Because of that, the new 2020 Toyota Yaris will get the brand-new look, based on the different platform. In cooperation with Mazda, we are going to see more similarities between these companies and their products.
Well, the partnership is not going to lead to some crazy sales. Subcompact crossovers are the most responsible for the situation in the smallest hatch class. Even Ford can’t cope with it and the Blue Oval company is discontinuing Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks. This is not the first time Toyota and Mazda are making each other better. Or it is better to say that Mazda helps Toyota? Back in the time when Toyota produced Scion vehicles, Mazda jumped in with the platform of its Mazda2 for iA sedan. Later, this vehicle became Yaris.
2020 Toyota Yaris / Mazda2 Specs
A 1.5-liter displacement remains under the hood of the 2020 Toyota Yaris. Well, Mazda is also using this engine for its Mazda2 hatch. But, let’s compare outputs of these two units.
For the current Yaris, a 1.5-liter engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The automatic gearbox is optional. Both routers are sending power to front wheels. No AWD is available. This system is good for 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. With the automatic gearbox, you will get a better gas mileage (32/40 mpg). If you are a fan of a manual transmission, the rate drops to 30/39 mpg for city/highway drive.
On the other hand, a 1.5-liter petrol drivetrain for the Mazda2 can produce 75, 90, or 115 hp. The drivetrain sends power to either 5-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Again, front-wheel is the standard drive, without further options. Of course, the less power, the more miles are there. With the base configuration, Mazda2 returns 42 mpg combined. The setup with 90 hp offers 38, and 115 hp comes with 41 mpg combined.
Standard models can reach 106 mph and these will sprint to 60 mph in 12 seconds. The best outputs of the Mazda2 GT Sport are 115 hp, 110 lb-ft (150 Nm) of torque, 0-60 mph in 9 seconds, max speed 125 mph, combined mileage 41 mpg.
Mazda2 Design – Pros and Cons
Toyota is making a tough decision. But, we shouldn’t doubt in moves by the Japanese company. They opted for the Mazda2 hatchback to be the base for the future 2020 Toyota Yaris. So, what will the iconic hatchback gain from its new sibling?
First of all, the Mazda2 is well known for its interior. The cabin is looking elegant. Of course, there is not too much space. None subcompact vehicle can provide you this. If you are taller, then you should look for some bigger car. Behind the steering wheel, the impression is very sporty. Mazda2 comes with comfortable seats and multi-functional steering wheel. Finally, the efficiency of the engine is even greater with a lot of lightweight materials used for body parts. The Mazda2 weights only 2,280 pounds. Equipment for the entry-level model is not so generous. But, as you are climbing up the trim levels, the features are better than you can find elsewhere.
Engine noise is real trouble for the Mazda2. That is the part where Toyota might be best in the world. The isolation could be delivered by this company. With it, the 2020 Toyota Yaris could fix one of the major issues of its future sibling. Bigger wheels on higher trim levels will cause bumps. Also, the functionality of the Mazda2 is not at the highest levels. Again, Toyota’s designers could jump in and create more space and comfort.
2020 Toyota Yaris Will get the Latest Entune 3.0
The Entune system will get the next update very soon. However, the infotainment system is still fresh (launched in 2018) and it has a lot of things to offer. The new 2020 Toyota Yaris will get it to improve its chances on the market. A touchscreen display, Siri voice commands, and GPS link is available with standard package. Upper versions will add JBL audio, Safety Connect system, and navigation.
2020 Toyota Yaris Release Date and Price
The new 2020 Toyota Yaris based on the Mazda2 platform could be available during this year. One of the next car shows could show us the new vehicle. However, both companies are still silent about partnerships. On the other hand, our reliable sources from Toyota and Mazda are giving us hints that 2020 Toyota Yaris / Mazda2 hatchbacks are new siblings. We can already call them twins.
An attractive price will make the 2020 Toyota Yaris competitive in the market. Subcompact crossovers are taking more and more buyers. The only thing that can keep current fans is an eye-catching starting cost. The base units cost around $16,000 and Toyota will have to keep the next 2020 Yaris at a similar level.
