The Japanese largest car manufacturer comes with a new concept car although many believe that the new Toyota GR HV Sports Concept is actually 86 hybrid with Targa Top. The company presents a new concept car.
It is supposed to preview arrival of some future model that will eventually compete with Mazda Miata. For this occasion, the company used the platform of the current Toyota 86 GT but introduces plenty of new technologies. This concept car comes with a completely new body style, with Targa roof and that is something we didn’t see since legendary Supra.
With the new body style, new powertrain arrives too. While the current Toyota 86 uses an internal combustion gasoline engine, this concept comes with a completely new hybrid powertrain, borrowed from the company’s competition models. Although this is just a concept at the moment, many technologies should be used in the future.
Toyota GR HV Sports Concept design
This concept is about to bring something new from Toyota. It comes with many interesting design solutions, although it is basically very similar to a 86 coupe. It rides on the same platform, which is quite clear when you see dimensions of two cars. Moreover, new concept features the same dashboard, with just some smaller tweaks. In terms of base design characteristics, new Toyota GR HV Sports Concept comes with a different body style.
It is pretty refreshing from Toyota to see a two-seat convertible with Targa roof. That is something we didn’t see for many years. The whole idea is to create a small and affordable sports car, which will give so much fun and excellent performances. That’s the reason why GR HV Sports Concept comes with so much interesting new design solutions. Both in mechanical and visual aspect.
Toyota GR HV Sports Concept styling and interior
Despite the fact that Toyota GR HV Sports Concept rides on the same platform as current-generation 86, it comes with plenty of novelties. There is a completely new body style, a two-door convertible. This concept is here to preview the arrival of two possible new models. The first one is the next generation of GT 86 coupe. The other, more interesting one is a new convertible that will bring the spirit of the legendary 800 and Supra models. With Targa roof and RWD layout, this car could easily become one of the most competitive models in class, competitive even with the legendary Miata.
The concept comes in a black matte finish. The company wanted to accentuate its power and aggressiveness and they have done it right. As we already mentioned, interior design is pretty much the same. However, there are many new interesting details, such as new manual transmission switch.
Toyota GR HV Sports Concept powertrain
Details about powertrain are completely unknown. At the moment, we can presume that the Toyota GR HV Sports Concept features a hybrid system similar to the TS050 Hybrid endurance race car. Moreover, new concept borrows many visual details, such as LED headlights, aluminum wheels, and rear diffuser.
So, what to expect from the potential production model? According to some reports, a new model will be able to go from zero to sixty in about 4.5 seconds. It will feature a front engine/rear-wheel drive layout, which promises plenty of fun. Transmission is probably the most interesting details about this concept. It is basically a six-speed automatic, while a six-speed manual operation is available at the press of a button, using a compact H-pattern gearshift. More details about this hybrid powertrain and other parts of drivetrain should be announced at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.
Toyota GR HV Sports Concept production
The Toyota GR HV Sports is just a concept car at the moment. However, we believe that many of its new design solutions will find the place in some future production model. One of them will be a new generation of 86 Coupe, but we also expect to see a new two-seat roadster in the future.
