One of the largest car makers in the world works on a heavy duty truck with an alternative source of power. The Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck is potentially a new model to come from the company.
It will be something completely new from the manufacturer that is commonly known for making passenger cars. For this occasion, the company already developed a new powertrain, which will use many technology solutions from the new Mirai. This truck is about to give everything you need.
It should feature a plenty of power, tons of torque, great economy and, most importantly, zero emissions. The new model is about to start testing in California.
Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck design
This will definitely be something we didn’t use from the Japanese manufacturer. A class 8 Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck is about to start testing and could potentially be a great step forward in terms of technologies and overall design. Toyota has already developed a fuel cell transit bus and we expect to see many of those achievements implemented in this truck.
For now, we know that the test mule will use two Mirai fuel cell stacks along with the 12-kWh battery pack. This system should be able to provide 670 horsepower and 1325 pound-feet of torque. This huge amount of power should provide significantly better performances compared to conventional diesel-powered trucks. Also, the company promises great range and fuel economy.
Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck testing
According to the company’s spokesman, Toyota has completed over 4000 miles during development and results are amazing. However, this doesn’t mean anything until we see results in real-life conditions. For this occasion, Toyota will transport several Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck prototypes to California. Here future testing will be done.
In these conditions, we will see true capabilities of the fuel cell system and capture real-world performance data, with the routes eventually growing longer in distance. This will show the for further developments and show areas where is enough space for some improvements.
Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck future
If we consider that trucks are among biggest pollutants in the car industry, it is clear that diesel engines will be replaced completely in upcoming decades. This leaves a huge space for the development of fuel-cell vehicles and vehicles with other alternative sources of power.
The Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck definitely has a lot of potentials. The Japanese carmaker had always been keen when it comes to electrified vehicles and this seems like a logical extension. However, many other manufacturers work on these vehicles too. For example, there are companies like Tesla, Cummins, Mercedes-Benz, and others that also work on similar projects.
Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck at the Olympic Games
As you probably heard, Toyota already announced that they plan to deploy more than 100 fuel cell buses in Tokyo area ahead of that city’s 2020 Olympic Games. So, if we consider that trucks will also play an important role in this event, we can also expect from the Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered semi truck to participate.
